The Illusion of Good Outturn

Outturn looks good.
And that is often where the mistake begins.
A cargo shows 48–50 lbs.
On paper, it looks like a strong buy.
So the decision feels simple:
high outturn means good value.
But reality is more complex.
Outturn measures quantity.
It does not measure quality.
Two cargos can have the same outturn,
but completely different outcomes after processing.
What matters is not how much kernel you get.
It is what kind of kernel you get.
Inside the same outturn, structure can vary:
Higher WW ratio
Or higher SW and lower grades
Or more defects and inconsistent color
This is where value changes.
A cargo with strong WW recovery creates stability.
A cargo with high SW creates pressure.
You can still sell it.
But not at the price you expected.
This is the illusion.
You think you bought a “good outturn” cargo.
But after processing, the structure does not support your margin.
The loss does not come from price movement.
It comes from mismatch between expectation and reality.
Experienced buyers don’t stop at outturn.
They look at structure:
Kernel distribution
Color consistency
Defect level
Realizable mix
Because value is not created at the raw level.
It is realized at the kernel level.
Final Thought
Outturn tells you how much.
Structure tells you how much it is worth.

What are you going through that is difficult to put into words?

It may be financial pressure, insomnia, caregiving, burnout, leadership stress, uncertainty, relationship challenges, or an experience that feels difficult to explain.

You do not need to write perfectly. Simply tell your story.

You may share:

  1. What is happening in your life right now?
  2. What has been on your mind the most lately?
  3. What feels most difficult, stressful, or exhausting?
  4. What have you tried so far?
  5. What surprised you?
  6. If you could give this experience a name, what would you call it?

Not every experience needs an immediate solution. Sometimes the first step is simply finding language for what you are experiencing.

Human Experience Atlas was created to help people see, recognize, and map the experiences they are living through.
