The Greatest Reward May Not Be Learning JSON

One evening, I was working through what felt like an endless amount of content.

Write an article.

Convert it into an MP3.

Upload it to Spotify.

Generate a JSON file.

Publish it on the website.

Check every link.

The project had grown large enough that many people would probably say the obvious solution was to hire someone.

Then my fifteen-year-old son said something simple.

“Dad writes the articles. I’ll handle the JSON.”

A few minutes later, he had already made a plan.

Five MP3 files a day.

Convert them into JSON.

Keep going.

When we reach one thousand articles, we’ll decide what comes next.

What surprised me most was not the number.

It was that he never asked,

“When will we finish?”

Instead, he naturally broke an enormous project into pieces that could be completed today.

It looked like a small moment.

It may turn out to be one of the most valuable lessons he could learn.

The Common Misunderstanding

Most people would see a teenager helping his father with technical tasks.

Converting files.

Copying and pasting.

Uploading content.

Using AI.

Learning a few digital skills.

Those skills certainly matter.

But they may not be the real reward.

Technology changes quickly.

Today’s workflow will eventually disappear.

JSON may be replaced.

New AI tools will emerge.

Software will evolve.

If the only thing a child learns is how to use a specific tool, much of that knowledge may have a limited lifespan.

The deeper value lies somewhere else.

What Is Actually Being Built

The human brain does more than accumulate knowledge.

It builds ways of organizing complexity.

Every day my son looks at a project containing thousands of articles.

Instead of feeling overwhelmed, he reduces the cognitive load by turning one enormous objective into a repeatable daily rhythm.

Five files.

Tomorrow, another five.

The nervous system gradually learns that large problems do not have to create panic.

They simply need structure.

That is decomposition.

It is one of the foundational skills behind software engineering, project management, scientific research, and entrepreneurship.

Another pattern quietly begins to emerge.

After repeating the workflow long enough, the question changes.

Instead of asking,

“What do I need to do today?”

People begin asking,

“Which step can be standardized?”

“What slows the process down?”

“How can the next iteration become easier?”

This is process thinking.

The work is no longer just being completed.

The system itself is being improved.

Working with AI every day creates another layer of learning.

AI stops being a search engine.

It becomes a teammate.

Humans provide judgment.

AI handles repetition.

Humans verify quality.

AI accelerates execution.

Over time, collaboration between human judgment and artificial intelligence becomes a natural habit rather than an unusual skill.

There is another lesson that is even harder to notice.

Many people perform well when managing ten tasks.

Few remain calm when the number becomes ten thousand.

The challenge is rarely intelligence.

It is cognitive overload.

A nervous system that has never learned to organize large-scale work often reacts with confusion long before the work itself becomes impossible.

Five files each day sounds insignificant.

Yet after one year, that becomes roughly 1,800 completed files.

After three years, more than 5,000.

Not because someone suddenly became extraordinarily productive.

Simply because they kept showing up.

That is what compounding feels like from the inside.

A Deeper Perspective

The sentence that stayed with me was not the plan.

It was this:

“Dad writes the articles. I’ll handle the JSON.”

It sounds ordinary.

Yet hidden inside those few words is a shift in perspective.

He was no longer thinking,

“I’m helping Dad.”

He had started seeing the work as a system.

One person creates.

Another processes.

Another verifies.

Another publishes.

Each person owns part of the workflow.

Together, the parts create something much larger than any individual could produce alone.

This is how businesses operate.

This is how research teams operate.

This is increasingly how AI-enabled organizations operate.

Perhaps ten years from now, nobody will care about JSON files.

The software will be different.

The platforms will be different.

Even AI itself will look different.

But the ability to decompose complexity, think in systems, collaborate with AI, improve workflows, and trust the power of steady accumulation will still be valuable.

Those abilities are remarkably difficult to teach through traditional education alone.

Sometimes the greatest rewards are invisible while they are forming.

One day, my son may not even remember how many JSON files he created.

But he may discover that those ordinary evenings quietly shaped the operating system through which he thinks, works, and solves problems for the rest of his life.

Perhaps the real question is not whether your child is learning a technical skill.

Perhaps the better question is:
