The Greatest Investment I Can Make Is Not Teaching My Son AI. It’s Teaching Him How to Think

Many people ask why I spend so much time building an AI project with my son instead of simply enrolling him in another programming course.

After weeks of processing thousands of files, waiting for long-running jobs to finish, and solving one technical problem after another, I realized something.

The greatest value of this project has never been the software.

It is the way a young mind learns to solve problems.

What I see is not a child “fixing bugs.”

I see an AI engineer learning how to think.

Whenever the system breaks, the process is almost always the same.

Read the logs.
Form a hypothesis.
Ask GPT.
Try a solution.
If it fails, go back.
Find the root cause.
Rewrite the code.
Run everything again.

This is far more than debugging.

It is the most valuable learning loop an engineer can develop.

Programming languages will evolve.

Frameworks will come and go.

Today’s AI models will eventually be replaced.

But the ability to analyze problems, reason through uncertainty, and continuously improve will remain valuable for an entire lifetime.

One thing has surprised me throughout this journey.

I don’t need to know every detail of Python to help my son.

My role is different.

I don’t need to write every line of code.

My job is to keep the project emotionally stable when problems appear.

When Docker refuses to start.

When PostgreSQL throws warnings.

When processing ten thousand files takes an entire night.

When something simply doesn’t work.

At those moments, my responsibility is not technical.

It is human.

Stay calm.

Avoid creating pressure that everything must be fixed immediately.

Help break a complex problem into smaller pieces.

Keep reminding him of the long-term objective.

Those skills are just as important as programming.

Many engineering projects do not fail because people lack knowledge.

They fail because people lose patience before discovering the real problem.

One detail especially caught my attention.

One night my son worked until four in the morning.

The next morning he woke up excited to continue.

That doesn’t mean staying up late is healthy.

But it reveals something much deeper.

His motivation comes from discovery.

Not from pressure.

Not because someone forced him to study.

Every solved problem feels like opening another door.

Every successful run reveals another layer of how the system works.

Psychologists often describe this as flow—a state where curiosity becomes stronger than fatigue.

The Cashew AI project is teaching far more than programming.

It is teaching an entire engineering mindset.

My son is learning:

Python
Docker
PostgreSQL
Vector Databases
Embeddings
OCR
Document Processing
System Architecture
Debugging
AI Workflows

These are not just technologies.

They are building blocks for solving complex problems.

My contribution is completely different.

I bring more than twenty years of real-world knowledge from the global cashew industry.

Contracts.

Market reports.

Trade disputes.

Supply chains.

Business experience that no AI model can generate on its own without authentic data.

AI becomes powerful because of real data.

Real data becomes transformative when someone knows how to build systems around it.

When domain expertise meets engineering, something much bigger becomes possible.

The project stops being a programming exercise.

It becomes a way of turning decades of experience into scalable intelligence.

If I could offer one piece of advice to any parent building something with their child, it would be this:

Don’t aim to finish the code.

Aim to understand why the system works.

Code will eventually be rewritten.

Frameworks will eventually become obsolete.

Today’s tools will eventually be replaced.

But the ability to understand systems, trace root causes, and learn from every failure compounds for decades.

Perhaps the greatest outcome of the Cashew AI project will not be an AI application.

Perhaps it will be something far more valuable.

A young person who knows how to think, how to learn, and how to build systems that solve real problems.

Maybe the real question isn’t how many lines of code a child writes.

Maybe the real question is:

Who do they become after solving a thousand problems they once thought were impossible?
