Feedback Loops

Feedback Loops: How Systems Learn From Their Own Activity

Activation alone is not enough.

A system becomes intelligent only when its outputs influence its future behavior.

This recurring cycle is known as a feedback loop.

Without feedback, every activation behaves as if it were the first.

Nothing accumulates.

Nothing improves.

Nothing is remembered.

Feedback Creates Structural Memory

Consider learning to ride a bicycle.

Each attempt produces new sensory information.

Balance improves because previous outputs become future inputs.

The same mechanism appears in businesses.

Customer reactions modify products.

Products modify customer behavior.

Customer behavior generates new market information.

The system gradually reorganizes itself.

Feedback transforms isolated events into continuous adaptation.

Positive and Negative Feedback

Positive feedback amplifies activation.

Negative feedback stabilizes activation.

Healthy systems require both.

Growth without stabilization becomes instability.

Stability without growth becomes stagnation.

The objective is not maximizing feedback.

It is designing feedback that improves future propagation.

Activation Map

Input → Output → Feedback → Better Input

If systems continuously learn from themselves, what determines whether those activations successfully spread across the entire network?

Next: Activation Propagation.

Share Your Experience

What are you going through that is difficult to put into words?

It may be financial pressure, insomnia, caregiving, burnout, leadership stress, uncertainty, relationship challenges, or an experience that feels difficult to explain.

You do not need to write perfectly. Simply tell your story.

You may share:

  1. What is happening in your life right now?
  2. What has been on your mind the most lately?
  3. What feels most difficult, stressful, or exhausting?
  4. What have you tried so far?
  5. What surprised you?
  6. If you could give this experience a name, what would you call it?

Not every experience needs an immediate solution. Sometimes the first step is simply finding language for what you are experiencing.

Human Experience Atlas was created to help people see, recognize, and map the experiences they are living through.
