The Survival Point of a Broker
When most people enter the brokerage profession, they believe success is measured by one thing:
Closing deals.
The more contracts, the better.
The higher the commission, the better.
There is nothing inherently wrong with that.
Every broker needs revenue to survive.
But after many years in commodity markets, I began asking a different question.
What is the Survival Point of a broker?
What is the one thing that must never be lost if the business is to continue creating value for years—even decades—to come?
At first, I thought it was clients.
Then I thought it was market knowledge.
Later, I believed it was a strong professional network.
Over time, however, I realized that all of these can be lost and rebuilt.
Clients come and go.
Markets change.
Supply chains shift.
Entire industries rise and fall.
A broker can even start over in a completely new market.
But there is one thing that, once lost, quietly weakens everything else.
Trust.
A broker may lose a transaction.
A broker may lose a customer.
A broker may experience years of difficult markets.
Yet if trust remains intact, the system still retains its ability to recover.
Clients return.
Partners make introductions.
New opportunities emerge.
The business continues to regenerate itself.
The opposite is equally true.
A broker who sacrifices trust for a short-term commission may increase today’s income while simultaneously reducing tomorrow’s opportunities.
The business appears healthy.
The operating system is quietly deteriorating.
That is why trust is not simply a competitive advantage.
It is the Survival Point.
There have been times when I advised clients not to buy.
Times when I recommended waiting instead of acting.
Times when I accepted losing a commission because the client would have faced a much larger loss.
Viewed through the lens of a single transaction, those decisions seemed expensive.
Viewed across an entire career, they became some of the most profitable decisions I ever made.
Because commissions are temporary.
Trust compounds.
From the perspective of the Human Operating System, trust is never built through promises alone.
It is built through repeated evidence.
Every honest recommendation.
Every thoughtful decision made under uncertainty.
Every moment when a broker places the client’s long-term interests above immediate personal gain.
Each interaction becomes another piece of evidence stored inside the client’s decision-making system.
Eventually, something changes.
The client no longer thinks,
“This is my broker.”
Instead, they think,
“This is the person I call before making an important decision.”
At that point, your role has fundamentally changed.
You are no longer merely facilitating transactions.
You have become part of the client’s decision architecture.
That position is extraordinarily difficult to replace.
Commodity markets will always remain uncertain.
Prices fluctuate.
Supply tightens.
Demand weakens.
Policies change.
Liquidity disappears.
No broker can control the market.
But every broker can decide what they will protect above everything else.
Protect commissions, and you may win today.
Protect trust, and you preserve your ability to create value tomorrow.
Over time, I realized that the Survival Point of a broker is not revenue.
It is not the number of contracts signed.
It is not market share.
It is the ability to ensure that every important decision strengthens rather than weakens the confidence others place in your judgment.
When that Survival Point remains intact, clients, opportunities, reputation, and income can all be rebuilt—even after difficult years.
Perhaps the most important question is no longer:
“How can I close one more deal?”
But rather:
“What must I never sacrifice if I want clients to call me first whenever they face an important decision?”

Share Your Experience
What are you going through that is difficult to put into words?
It may be financial pressure, insomnia, caregiving, burnout, leadership stress, uncertainty, relationship challenges, or an experience that feels difficult to explain.
You do not need to write perfectly. Simply tell your story.
You may share:
- What is happening in your life right now?
- What has been on your mind the most lately?
- What feels most difficult, stressful, or exhausting?
- What have you tried so far?
- What surprised you?
- If you could give this experience a name, what would you call it?
Not every experience needs an immediate solution. Sometimes the first step is simply finding language for what you are experiencing.
Human Experience Atlas was created to help people see, recognize, and map the experiences they are living through.
