RCN Quality Shift 2025 – How Silk Peeling Rate Reshapes Buying Decisions

The 2025 crop has introduced a clear shift in raw cashew quality across West Africa.
One of the most critical indicators this season is the silk peeling rate (testa removal rate).

• If you need immediate processing visibility, bonded cargo remains the clearer route.
• If you are positioning for future crop, CNF must be evaluated against kernel demand — not just seller narrative.
• In this phase, the best decisions are made by comparing cargo structure, not by reacting to headline price alone.

1. Silk peeling rate is significantly higher in 2025
In bonded cargo processing, buyers are seeing abnormal levels:
Nigeria (Kogi): up to 50% peeling rate
Normal years: only 20–30%
This confirms a broader reality:
2025 crop quality across West Africa is weaker than usual.
Countries affected include:
Ghana
Ivory Coast (IVC)
Nigeria
Higher silk retention leads to:
more processing effort
higher cost
lower kernel value
2. Origin differences are now critical
Nigeria is no longer a single-quality origin.
Ogbomosso (premium zone) shows:
lower peeling rate in early crop
better kernel recovery
higher final value
Even toward the end of the crop, peeling increases, but still remains better than Kogi.
Kogi (Nigeria) shows:
consistently high peeling rate
increased processing cost
lower kernel value after trimming
Ivory Coast (IVC) initially appears attractive:
lower silk peeling rate
easier processing
higher raw price (~+100 USD/MT compared to Nigeria)
However, a key issue emerges in late crop:
high insect damage
more spotted kernels (SK)
significantly lower selling price (~60,000 VND/kg)
3. Cost impact of high peeling rate
When peeling rate increases:
re-processing cost rises significantly
more labor is required for scraping and trimming
higher processing loss occurs
With current market conditions:
Re-processing cost is now around 12,000 VND/kg of affected kernel
This means:
A 15% increase in peeling rate → ~32 USD/MT additional cost
A 25% increase → ~50–55 USD/MT additional cost
👉 This is no longer a minor adjustment
👉 It is a material cost driver
4. Kernel value gap
Final kernel value varies significantly:
Clean kernels (WW): around 3.10–3.15 USD/lb
Scraped / lower quality kernels: around 2.90–2.95 USD/lb
A small drop in quality leads to a meaningful drop in price.
5. Strategic reality: Nigeria vs IVC
While IVC offers lower peeling rates, late crop insect damage reduces its advantage.
Nigeria, especially Ogbomosso:
maintains better kernel quality
produces higher-value output after processing
As a result, Ogbomosso still provides a better overall margin than IVC late crop.
6. Vietnam factor: shell price reshapes buying power
Another major factor is cashew shell value.
Shell accounts for 70–75% of raw cashew weight, making it a key component of total recovery value.
Recent movement:
shell price dropped from 4,800 VND/kg to 3,000 VND/kg
This significantly reduces processor profitability.
7. Market implication
If shell price increases again to:
4,000–5,000 VND/kg
Then processors will be able to:
pay higher RCN prices
compete more aggressively in bonded cargo purchasing
8. Final conclusion
The 2025 market is no longer driven by price alone.
Profitability now depends on:
origin selection
silk peeling rate
insect damage level
processing cost
by-product value (shell)
Buyers who focus only on CIF price will miss the real margin.
Buyers who understand structure will control profitability.
