When a Six-Year-Old Asks to “Go to Work”
For the past few evenings, my six-year-old son has walked into my office with the same question.
He doesn’t ask to watch cartoons.
He doesn’t ask to play games.
Instead, he asks very seriously:
“Dad, can I work today?”
His “job” sounds simple.
Open the laptop.
Find the correct audio file.
Upload it to Spotify.
Wait for the processing to finish.
Copy the embed code.
Paste it into the Kid Curriculum page on our website using Elementor.
To an adult, it looks like nothing more than a few mouse clicks.
But to a six-year-old, it is an entirely new world.
On the first day, I showed him every step.
“This button.”
“Next.”
“Wait a little.”
“Now click Publish.”
He moved slowly, carefully following along.
Then a screen appeared with two options:
Now or Schedule.
He stopped.
He stared at the screen for a long time.
Then he looked at me.
I stayed silent.
After a few seconds, he pressed Publish by himself.
Then came another wait.
Another moment of uncertainty.
When it was time to copy the embed code, he became confused.
“Dad… where did the mouse pointer go?”
“Why doesn’t the right click work?”
I was about to explain.
Before I could say anything, he turned to me and said:
“Dad, don’t tell me. Don’t explain. Let me figure it out myself.”
So I stayed quiet.
He kept looking at the screen.
Trying to remember what he had done the day before.
Thinking through each possibility.
Sometimes nearly a full minute passed without a single click.
Then suddenly, he found the correct button.
His face lit up as if he had just solved a difficult puzzle.
What surprised me even more was his attitude throughout the entire process.
He never became frustrated.
He never complained that it was difficult.
He never wanted to quit.
He simply kept trying—with genuine excitement.
The next evening, he asked to work again.
On the third day, he remembered many of the steps without any help.
By now, we have uploaded about ten audio lessons to Spotify and embedded them into the Kid Curriculum website together.
What’s interesting is that he isn’t simply learning where to click.
His brain is learning something much deeper.
It is learning how to build a mental model of an unfamiliar system.
The first time, everything feels uncertain.
Which button comes next?
What if I click the wrong one?
What happens after Publish?
With every successful repetition, his brain quietly updates its predictions.
“After Next, this screen appears.”
“After Publish, I have to wait.”
“Then the embed code becomes available.”
“I know what comes next.”
This is how confidence is actually built.
Not through praise.
But through repeated experiences where prediction gradually matches reality.
Research in neuroscience and learning suggests something similar.
When people discover the solution themselves after an appropriate amount of effort, they don’t simply remember the procedure more effectively.
They also build a deeper belief:
“I can learn things I don’t already know.”
Adults often rush to help because we care.
The moment we see a child struggling, we instinctively want to explain.
We want to make the process easier.
But sometimes, solving the problem too quickly takes away the most valuable part of learning.
The moment when the brain connects scattered pieces of information into a working model.
Perhaps children don’t always need more explanations.
Sometimes they simply need an adult who is patient enough to remain silent for another thirty seconds.
Someone who trusts that they are capable of finding the next step themselves.
Uploading ten audio files is not the most meaningful achievement.
The real achievement is that, through ten repeated experiences, a Human Operating System is quietly taking shape.
An operating system that doesn’t merely know which button to press.
It learns how to face uncertainty, remain patient, think independently, solve unfamiliar problems, and continue moving forward.
Perhaps the real question is not how we can help children learn faster.
Perhaps the better question is whether we are giving them enough opportunities for their brains to discover:
“I can figure this out myself.”
